Marian Shapiro workshops 2018
Understanding Values – working with light dark and contrast 6th July 9 am – 5pm
Value, (how light or dark something is) is an important concept in art. Particularly in mosaic, the correct use of values can contribute enormously to the “readability” of a piece. Using a mix of theory and practical exercises, this course aims to give participants an understanding of the concept of value and the tools to use it effectively in their own mosaic work. This is a mainly theoretical course, the mosaic making will be to produce samples rather than creative pieces. Intermediate/Advanced
Cost: Early bird bookings by May 1st $135. $170 for bookings after that. Plus materials fee TBC
Texture and Light – Mixed Media Mosaics 2 days 7/8 July 9 am – 5pm both days
This course looks at creating visually exciting modern mosaic pieces using the direct method and working with cement-based adhesive. We will look at the possibilities of working with texture, colour and light by exploring different styles of laying the pieces, and mosaic mixed media. Some mosaic experience desirable. Not suitable for absolute beginners.
Cost: Early bird bookings by May 1st $270. $350 for bookings after that. Plus materials fee TBC
Bend Fold and Undulate – 1 day 9 July 10 am – 5 pm
Learn different methods of making dimensional substrates for mosaic, using fibreglass mesh and cement-based adhesive, to make two lightweight wall hanging substrates of your own design. Substrates are made in two stages and you will finish yours at home. Marian will supply a half-made folded or undulating substrate to complete during course so you get hands-on experience. At the end of the day you should be confident to design and make your own substrates.
Some mosaic experience desirable and will be particularly useful for those who want to move beyond the flat surface.
Cost: Early bird bookings by May 1st $135. $170 for bookings after that. Plus materials fee $35
