Marian Shapiro workshops at Beliana Mosaics

Gembrook 2019

Bend Fold and Undulate – 1 day 21st March 10 am – 5 pm

Learn different methods of making dimensional substrates for mosaic, using fibreglass mesh and cement-based adhesive to make two lightweight wall hanging substrates of your own design. Substrates are made in two stages and you will finish yours at home. Marian will supply a half-made folded or undulating substrate to complete during the course so you get hands-on experience. At the end of the day you should be confident to design, make and mosaic your own substrates.
Some mosaic experience desirable and will be particularly useful for those who want to move beyond the flat surface.

Cost: Early bird bookings by January 30th $140. $180 for bookings after that. Plus materials fee $35

Understanding Values – working with light dark and contrast 22nd March 9 am – 5pm

Value, (how light or dark something is) is an important concept in art. Particularly in mosaic, the correct use of values can contribute enormously to the “readability” of a piece. Using a mix of theory and practical exercises, this course aims to give participants an understanding of the concept of value and the tools to use it effectively in their own mosaic work. This is a mainly theoretical course, the mosaic making will be to produce samples rather than creative pieces. Intermediate/Advanced

Cost: Early bird bookings by January 30th $140. $180 for bookings after that. Plus materials fee $25

Working with Smalti – 2 day 23-24 March 9am – 5pm

A traditional and prestigious mosaic material with unique properties with light, smalti has been used for over a thousand years to produce beautiful mosaic work.   Participants will learn the differences and similarities between different types of smalti.  We will look at the visual effects which can be achieved by different ways of laying smalti and learn how to cut it using wheeled mosaic nippers.  Each participant will work towards a small smalti mosaic of their own design suitable for exterior using the direct method with tinted cement-based adhesive. Substrates, adhesives and oxides will be supplied but students need to bring their own smalti and any other materials they wish to incorporate.  Any smalti that can be cut with wheeled nippers is suitable for this course.  Smalti Australia will offer a discount to registered participants. Intermediate
