The Class-This is an in-depth exploration of how to create and how the process works using pebble, stone and materials you bring!I will present a thorough composition presentation. This class is ideal if you have some mosaic experience but have been using others designs because you are not sure how to proceed with your own. We will analyze various composition styles, make several simple drawing exercises and create two small works in two days. Bring in an examples of mosaics you want to review.I will provide some samples and an abstract template as a starting point. I have been creating pebble mosaics internationally for the last 15 years so this class will focus on using pebbles in your small scale mosaic artwork.

About Debora Aldo– She has been making mosaics since 2003, and teaching art to students from 3 to 93. She is a certified teaching artist with the state of Connecticut where she lives, has trained in Italy working in stone and smalti, and with Maggy Howarth on pebble mosaics. She has worked, exhibited and taught internationally forthe last dozen years. She has been under contract to a city in Florida for the last 3 years creating large scale public art projects and has been in the SAMA IMA architectural site specific exhibit multiple time for her well known pebble mosaic work.

Marian Shapiro workshops at Beliana Mosaics

Reverse/Indirect Method
When: Friday 1st November 9 am – 5 pm.
Cost: $140 plus $25 materials fee

Where: Beliana Mosaics Gembrook Victoria

Discover the what, how, why and when of the reverse/indirect method, the traditional way to get a flat surface in mosaics. You will make two small sample mosaics using variations of the method and gain an understanding of when and why to work indirectly. This is a technical course concentrating on the method and not aimed at producing an original creative artwork. Full course notes and exercises provided.

Intermediate – aimed at students with some mosaic experience who wish to learn a different method of fabrication

Understanding Values
When: Saturday 2nd November 9 am – 5 pm.
Cost $140 plus $30 materials fee

Where: Beliana Mosaics Gembrook Victoria.

Value, (how light or dark something is) is an important concept in art. Particularly in mosaic, the correct use of values can make or break your work. Using a mix of theory and practical exercises, you will gain an understanding of the concept of value and the tools to use it effectively in your own mosaic work. We also cover basic colour theory, colour gradation and choosing grout colours. This is a mainly theoretical course, the mosaic making is to produce samples rather than creative pieces.

Intermediate/Advanced – Suitable for those who have been working in mosaic for a while and would like to take their work to a new level.

Understanding Andamento
                                                                  
When: Sunday 3rd November 9 am – 5 pm.
Cost: $140 plus $10 materials fee

Where: Beliana Mosaics Gembrook Victoria

Want to take your work to the next level? This workshop gives you an understanding of the visual grammar of mosaics by looking at both traditional and modern andamento (flow) and opus (laying patterns). Discover how to cut and lay your tesserae to best enhance your work. This course is theoretical and consists of presentations and exercises on and with paper. No drawing skills needed. There is no actual mosaic making in this course but you will leave with a practical understanding of the grammar of mosaics and the effects that can be achieved.

Intermediate/Advanced – for those with mosaic experience but wish to improve their knowledge of the fundamental principles of classical andamento to make their own work more harmonious to the eye.
