Texture and Light with Marian Shapiro

Are you ready to take your work to the next level?
Looking for new ways to use material to bring fresh life and energy to your work? Discover the possibilities of working with texture, colour and light in mosaic. Come away with inspirations and techniques to create individual, original and vibrant mosaic art. We will look at ways of using texture, including: • Using contrasting materials in the same work, • different ways of laying • methods for adding texture to material and • working with cement-based adhesive as a background. You will work towards a small hanging mosaic of your own design (22 cm x 22 cm) suitable for either interior or exterior display. Substrate, adhesive and colourants are provided. Bring your own tools and materials, but there will be some materials available for use and for purchase including slate, some fused glass and a limited amount of glazed and unglazed ceramic.
Marian is happy to discuss design with you before the class. As this course focuses on texture and light in mosaic, bring a mix of materials which work differently with light; eg: vitreous glass, unglazed ceramic, china, marble, pebbles, stained glass etc. Bring additional materials that call to you e.g.; beads, , glass gems, found objects, fossils etc. Materials of different heights are good for this course. Mirror, glitter tile and materials with a delicate backing are not appropriate for this workshop. Swapping and sharing will be encouraged. This workshop is not for absolute beginners, but aimed at those with some mosaic experience who wish to try new things and bring their work to a new level.

Bend Fold and Undulate with Marian Shapiro

2 Day workshop: Saturday 16th and Sunday 17 March 2024

Join acclaimed mosaic artist Marian Shapiro in this This fun and enjoyable workshop teaches you Marian’s trademark technique for making lightweight, dimensional substrates for mosaic.

On day one, we cover two methods for making lightweight non-flat wall-hanging substrates suitable for interior or exterior use. You will learn to make an undulating or folded wall hanging substrate of your own design. The second substrate is hollow, such as a wall-hanging mask or torso and introduces you to the technique of sand casting. Both of these pieces are made in two stages and will need to be finished in your own time after the course.

In the afternoon of the first day you will be given a small (approximately 20 x 25 cm) half-made folded or undulating form to to finish, including adding hanging hardware. This cures overnight ready to be worked on the next day. On day two you mosaic the substrate that you completed the day before.

By the end of the workshop you will have made two substrates up to the end of stage 1, completed a substrate including attaching hangers and other embellishments such as fringes and had experience mosaicing on a non-flat substrate. This will give you the skills to make and mosaic your own substrates from scratch at home.

All materials for making substrates are supplied, including supplies to finish off your first two substrates at home. For day two, mosaic materials are available but you may want to bring your own material to supplement.

This workshop is aimed at people with some previous mosaic experience who want to take their mosaics to a new level by making their own substrates.
